Remember when I said Empire of the Sun is a fun and funny band awhile ago? I still stand by it, but I will add that they are also FABULOUSLY EPIC:

I saw them live last week at LA's The Music Box, which unfortunately doesn't feature as amazing of a stage but still delivers a spectacular performance to a fortunately smaller audience than the video above. If you want to see most of the dazzling costumes that were worn by the band and backup dancers during the live shows, simply peruse the band's music videos. I kind of hate myself for thinking this when I saw the show, but I can't help drawing comparisons to Lady Gaga.

So the lead singer goes by Emperor Luke Steele, which is amazing because he is the perfect mix of Luke Skywalker and Blue Steel. He's a bizarre guy.

i want to feel bad for this girl and blame EDC promoters and security for not doing their job. but no matter how much i want to, i just can't.
i wonder what she'll tell her grandkids when they ask how she got her scars.

Why did Chazwick Bundick have to get a shitty drummer and guitarist for live shows? Now the performance is as if they are a live cover band covering Toro y Moi songs.

Fortunately, Caribou is fucking brilliant and saved the night. I've heard of their amazing 2 drummer sets, but didn't expect their jams to be so poetic and so seamless. Masterful is how I would best describe their set that perfectly blends all of their records to date into one cohesive performance. Absolutely unbelievable. And I don't even think tonight was one of their best shows.

All the meanwhile, my dad came along to the show and pretty much hold the same opinion as I do regarding both bands. Awesome! What a good night, except for the freezing weather.

Sorry for the recent silence, and sorry for that too-easy Broadway musical reference. The last month has been a tiresomely slow whirlwind, and with the drama of getting my Gmail account hacked and other emotional rides, I haven't had the chance to care about spreading the joy of music - only to selfishly enjoy it to myself. You must catch The Whitest Boy Alive if you ever have the opportunity, because I luckily attended one of their sold out NYC shows this week and it was too awesome! I can count with 2 hands how many times in my life I've ever been that bananas. Who knew 4 white kids could put on such a groovy dance party?

right one - gawd!!!

Oh wait, I know, because 2 of the members are from Berlin, and apparently, Berlin is where it's at if you want to party! You can read more about the show at BrooklynVegan, I felt they wrote an accurate review of it (and complete with a footage from the other show in NYC). You know it was a terrific performance when you still can't stop listening to the albums over and over again the fourth day after the show.

Seriously, if you haven't already, consider getting their albums Rules (2009) and Dreams (2006).

My boyfriend loves The Morning Benders. After watching this video, I understand why:

Their new album "Big Echo" is out on March 9th. They are to play in NYC on Feb. 25, but there's a discrepancy between what their website says and what the Market Hotel (the supposed venue) says on Myspace. If not, April 22 at Mercury Lounge works just fine too, maybe even better because by then my undergraduate thesis will be done and I will be free temporarily from the reins of the academic world.

This is completely unrelated to music, but I cannot pass up posting pictures of these outlandish looking heels from Fashion Week...and best of all, worn by a man! I am all about shoes that don't make sense, which is why I have this (in brown leather):

But these Nina Ricci heels spotted outside of the Rodarte show just blew me out of the waters. It completely challenges how (and for whom) we think shoes are supposed to function and fit. This is just way too badass - stuff like this and also this makes me think the world is becoming more and more like a fiction.

I don't think I've been this excited in years for any new release. For me, Lali Puna is in contention with The Radio Dept. as favorite band, and yes, I am definitely hoping that this new album also means a US tour sometime in 2010.

I saw Real Estate this Tuesday at the Fader party in Brooklyn Bowl, which is a third bowling alley, a third show venue, a third resto bar, and all coziness. This self-titled album is solid, but not exceptional for my taste that leans more toward electronic pop. What do all of these bands have in common? Not only are they excellent, but they also make it so easy to revive sweet memories of the good times we've all had.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults is currently playing shows in Los Angeles area, and if I were living there, I'd definitely see at least one.

I'd also try to catch The Mary Onettes. Their set yesterday at Union Hall in Brooklyn was awesome! It felt completely unreal, like I am not living in 2009, but instead in some wonderfully fictitious John Hughes-like film setting. And this song "God Knows I Had Plans" that I heard first yesterday sounds like it can totally change someone's life.

I feel crushed at the current state of shoegaze. It is apparently 2009's hottest Pitchfork commodity to have a "shoegaze revival" sound, an early 90's nostalgia that kids who look up to Pitchfork and the indie community as their divine word probably have no recollection of. What used to be music for old fogies is now music for the ever increasing hipsterdom of meaning-seeking youth. How did this happen? Could have MBV's reunion show last year contributed to any of this?

Maybe I am just too stubbornly sticking to the old, but how come the newer bands just don't sound as good?

It's always going to be a love and hate relationship for me and "dancey" music. However, this week I decided maybe I should just stop thinking about it and share some with you.

You're probably thinking, "Shakira?"

Well, why not?

The track is extremely catchy, and except for a single major flaw that a friend at Acrobatics Everyday hilariously pointed out, I'm okay with listening to it. I stumbled upon a remix Calvin Harris did of the song, but The Twelves would probably do a better job.

Speaking of The Twelves, what the hell happened to their NYC show? I saw them live in September at Webster Hall, which is a decent venue on weekdays but a major disaster on weekends. On Fridays, they have an event called "Girls & Boys", which is absolutely one of the most unfortunate things I've witnessed in the city.

Even worse, The Twelves didn't even come on stage until past 2 AM, which means by then most people have already dwindled or simply lying face down unconscious. I was disappointed to find the Brazilian duo in such horridness, but was still ultimately delighted by their performance. Their remixes, even at the hundredths time around, still amaze me. This one of Metric I heard first at the show.

And Basement Jaxx? Will they ever make another "Red Alert"? Probably not, but this song is pretty fun, and has autotune and other formulaic sounds hopefully featured as a future hit party tune in some club.

I am still very excited about Kings of Convenience's new album coming out in October, which is why I added another new track of theirs in this mix.

However, I am also equally as excited for Letting Up Despite Great Faults, whose self-titled debut LP comes out in the same month. Be on the lookout for this one, because I have a damn good hunch that it will steal the hearts of many this fall.

Empire of the Sun is a fun and funny band...

...from down under, and generally I like the groove that Aussies produce (ie. Cut Copy, Midnight Juggernauts). They also love Bali, so that's another thing I like that we have in common.

This last part I've been wanting to get out in public, but somehow never have since summer. As much as I like The Pains of Being Pure at Heart on record- actually, I kind of extremely enjoy their album- they are terrible live. How they were able to headline summer festivals this past year, it beats me. And really, how nice (!) that they have a token Asian girl who sings only four words in every song and dances behind a keyboard that she doesn't really play. I really appreciate the added (dis)value to our image. I really wish I could have more respect for the band for their live shows, but for now, I'll stick with listening to their mp3s, particularly this one, and maybe I'll just forget that I ever saw them perform.

I was one of the lucky audience to experience "The Build Up" and "Know How" performed by Kings of Convenience and Feist live yesterday at the Bowery Ballroom. Below is a short video of the tail end of the latter, just to give you a taste of what it was like. However, the best part was Feist joining in from the balcony in the unplugged no-mic version of "The Build Up". Thankfully, this amazing performance silenced even the muttering audience near the bar in the back of the room.

Kings of Convenience will release their junior album titled Declaration of Dependence sometime in October. The show last night consisted mostly of a preview of the new songs (including "Mrs Cold" from my previous post) and some older songs ("Cayman Islands", "Homesick", and "Little Kids" to name a few) and although I'm neither a concert nor album reviewer, I feel compelled to say something about their performance last night and upcoming album: the sound braver and more honest and mature, this album is proof that Kings of Convenience, perfect as they may be before in Quiet is the New Loud and Riot in an Empty Street, is still crafting a sound that continually outdoes their previous without going completely astray in direction. Declaration of Dependence is definitely a candidate for 2009's best album.

I just recently stumbled upon this mix I put together awhile ago. Second Year is for the fact that I had put this together during my second year of college. But it's peculiar that I had chosen songs of liminality to be the soundtrack of my sophomore year. Take a listen. Every song sounds like it cannot stand on its own, like it is in between. Maybe at that time I felt very in between, which is a feeling that I think unfortunately go unnoticed too often. I want to cherish that feeling. Be in it as much as I can. 2008: The Summer of C's

I was very surprised to know that not only anyone out there reads this, but that some of you also cared enough to tell me to continue posting! What a way to make a person feel better, especially in days like these when I reflect on having left one place for another with a heavy heart. Thanks to all of you for being such wonderful friends.

Though this blog was simply for mix EP's, I'm going to take the liberty to venture a bit out of my own mission statement and include a recap of the times spent not making mix EP's. After all, all things loose charm once a routine becomes of them. So, here it goes.

In a nutshell, the Cindiot has learned from a great many experiences in the past several months of summer that life is lived best when simple but active and with love. This summer's activities vary from such things like watching a Grand Sumo Wrestling Championship to purchasing the first-ever designer dress at Barney's Warehouse Sale, and from successfully understanding one Mandarin children's song in a CD of twelve to mediating cases of the Orange County Superior Court small claims court. Others that are especially enjoyable were playing beach volleyball and having out-of-state visitors.

Thus, I present to you this mix EP. It's for the sweetness of summer and the sour aftertaste that you get from it after the realization that it's gone past you. It's for the pang summer leaves and the jolt it gives that carries you onto times after. And for the way even in times after, summer still has the ability to conjure up memories of which you consciously try to keep stored "as it is" in the recessed parts of your heart, only to be sugarcoated later by none other than your own mind. The summer of C's is about how quickly it fleets, but not away.

Sure, everyone has bad days and everyone's entitled to a degree of pleasure out of self-pitiful sulking. But for how long must you wallow in that counter-intuitive pleasure before you take a look around and realize your self-pity has blinded you from the obvious, good things in life? For some, it only takes one short walk to the nearest park's dog-run to get them out of their funk. For others, it's as long as winter.

This EP I made for myself so that my wallowing time falls somewhere in between. And approximately 11 minutes and 42 seconds.
